Common questions
Where is my data?
On your phone, and nowhere else. Kite has no account and no server. That means nothing to sign into, and no copy of your finances on anyone’s machine.
So what happens if I lose my phone?
Whatever is in your last backup is what you get back. Kite reminds you every six days, and you should take that seriously. An iPhone backup (iCloud or a computer) usually covers Kite. On Android, Kite is left out of Google’s backup on purpose. Either way, a Kite backup file is the only copy you can point at and move to a different phone — including from an iPhone to an Android, or back.
Settings → Your data → Save a backup, then keep the file somewhere that isn’t only on the phone.
How do I move to a new phone?
Install Kite, then Settings → Your data → Restore from a backup, and pick the file. Restoring replaces everything currently in the app, so export first if there is anything on the new phone worth keeping.
Why are my pay periods not calendar months?
Because bills do not care about months. If you are paid on the 15th and the last day, the money you have to work with is whatever arrives on payday minus whatever falls due before the next one. Kite is built around that window rather than around January.
A bill is showing as late and I already paid it.
Tick it on the Period or Upcoming tab. Ticking a bill records it at its planned amount. If it came to a different amount, open Settings → Expenses, tap the bill and change its amount.
I did not spend a variable budget this period.
Nothing to do. Fixed bills and savings are obligations, so they go overdue if you miss them. Variable budgets are ceilings, not debts — once the period ends, an untouched one simply counts as zero.
Reminders are not arriving.
Check Settings → Reminders is on, and that notifications are allowed for Kite in your phone’s settings. Reminders are scheduled on your phone for the next three months (up to 60) and rebuilt whenever you change or tick something in Kite. Open Kite now and then to keep them topped up.
